Traditionally regarded as a seabird, the cormorant would often be encountered some distance inland, especially in the winter months. However, in recent years they have become a much more common sight on inland water bodies, and at any time of year. This large powerful bird looks all black from a distance, but close-up and in good light its plumage can be seen to have a metallic bronze sheen.
A close view will also reveal the white face and orange/yellow at the base of the bill. The main food item for the cormorant is fish, which it swims underwater in pursuit of. It is capable of staying underwater for quite some time, but rarely actually stays there for very long. In Japan, tame cormorants are trained to be used in a traditional fishing technique called 'Ukai'
